Head of Communications to Voice of the Ocean

Voice of the Ocean is an organisation that bridges the gap between ocean science and society. The ocean regulates climate, sustains biodiversity, and underpins life on Earth, yet it is often invisible and under pressure. Our mission is to make it visible, understood, and protected.

We support research with data, methods, and marine infrastructure; explore cultural and historical ties between people and the sea; create films, books, and education programs that make science accessible; and safeguard data and stories for generations. We also share the ocean’s voice widely through documentaries, books, and media.

The ocean covers 70% of our planet. Yet we’ve mapped more of the Moon’s surface than the seafloor beneath us.

That’s not just surprising - it’s astonishing and unacceptable.

Voice of the Ocean exists to change that equation. Through storytelling rooted in science and education that sparks curiosity, this foundation is making the invisible visible and challenging how we think about our blue planet. Now, as they expand their international presence, they're looking for a communications leader who can help position ocean knowledge where it belongs: at the centre of global conversation.

The Opportunity

This is about building something meaningful together. As Head of Communications, the successful candidate will lead Voice of the Ocean's communications, marketing, and engagement work across borders and channels—working closely with the entire organization to shape how the world understands our ocean.

The role demands both strategic thinking and rolled-up sleeves, with collaboration at its core. Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as part of the executive management team, this leader will inspire a small but fiercely dedicated communications team, partner with external agencies, and work alongside colleagues across VOTO to deliver the communication strategy. They'll forge strategic partnerships with stakeholders, advise and support leadership, and help the entire organization cut through the noise and create real impact.

The Challenge

The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of senior experience in communications, marketing, or media—and the wisdom to know that the best results come from genuine collaboration. They've built international brands and led global communications initiatives by bringing people together, not by working in silos.

They've earned their seat at executive tables through trust and partnership, participated in management teams where they've been both a strong voice and an attentive listener, and learned to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes by building bridges and nurturing relationships. A strong network within media, NGOs, and relevant stakeholders isn't just helpful—it's essential, and they know how to activate it through authentic connection.

Excellent command of both written and spoken English and Swedish is required. Experience from advocacy, NGOs, or international organisations will set candidates apart, and a genuine passion for ocean issues? That's the kind of spark that makes everything else come alive.

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is a leader who brings both vision and execution to the role. Specifically, they are someone who:

  • Motivates and inspires – A confident and principled leader who creates genuine engagement around shared goals and brings out the best in their team.

  • Combines creativity with practicality – Brings fresh ideas that translate into real results, balancing innovation with a hands-on, solution-oriented mindset.

  • Delivers with structure and focus – Plans ahead, prioritizes effectively, and consistently follows through on commitments.

  • Collaborates constructively – Listens well, communicates clearly, and resolves challenges smoothly while working responsively with diverse stakeholders.

  • Leads with authenticity – Balances professionalism with genuine presence, adapting naturally to different situations with personal maturity and self-awareness.

  • Acts with integrity – Driven by independence and strong ethical standards, making decisions according to their convictions and upholding high principles in everything they do.

What Voice of the Ocean Offers

Access to a global platform that most communications professionals only dream about. Collaboration with world-leading researchers, producers, NGOs, and UN bodies who are actually moving the needle. The chance to shape how millions of people understand the ocean—and why it matters.

But perhaps most importantly: the opportunity to prove that science-based communication doesn't have to be boring, that authority doesn't require arrogance, and that you can challenge outdated thinking while inviting everyone along for the journey.

This is for someone who wants their work to matter.
